Hyper Pigmentation

Hyper Pigmentation

SKIN PIGMENTATION TREATMENT

Hyperpigmentation refers to patches of skin that become darker than the surrounding areas of skin. It occurs when the skin produces excess melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color. It can affect people of all skin types.

What is skin pigmentation?

Skin pigmentation refers to a condition which changes the color of your skin tone, often making it darker. It usually affects the cheeks, nose, and forehead. Any form of discolouration or uneven appearance of the skin can be signs of pigmentation.

What causes skin pigmentation?

Usually, 70-80% of pigmentation is caused by the sun. Some other causes of skin pigmentation are listed below:

  • Excess production of melanin

  • Certain medications, including chemotherapy drugs.

  • Pregnancy hormones

  • Endocrine diseases, such as Addison's disease.

  • Insulin resistance.

  • Skin conditions such as eczema and rosacea

  • Contact dermatitis

How can skin pigmentation be treated?

Over-the-counter treatments

Skin pigmentation can be treated by over-the-counter (OTC) medications, serums and supplements which contain the right concentration of vitamin C because of its powerful antioxidant properties and its ability to inhibit melanin formation. The other two best vitamins for lightening dark spots are vitamin C, vitamin B12, and vitamin E. It has been observed that the most promising oral remedies for hyperpigmentation appear to be tranexamic acid, glutathione, isotretinoin, and proanthocyanidin.

Topical creams

Topical creams contain active topical agents such as arbutin, Vitamin C and glycolic acid, which hamper the production of melanin. The overnight applications of these agents increase the cell turnover by removing the top layer of dead skin, thereby treating the concerned area. These topical creams, however, must be recognized and recommended by a professional and should be applied at the correct concentration to yield the best results.

Skin brightening peels

Skin brightening peels usually contain chemicals that block the formation of melanin pigment by inhibiting the enzyme involved in the formation of pigment, thereby preventing discolouration. The chemicals contained in these peels are Kojic Acid, Phytic Acid, Ascorbic Acid, Arbutine, Titanium Dioxide and Retinyl Palmitate. When used in an optimal concentration, these peels can remove the epidermis layer so that the existing pigmentation is flushed out.

One thing that should be noted here is that these peel treatments should be done only under the supervision of a medical doctor, and one should consider getting the treatment done at a clinic instead of trying them at home.

Laser treatment

Laser treatment is a technology that involves using concentrated and short beams of laser light energy to depigment the area. Also known as the laser peel/carbon peel, this technique selectively heats and destroys highly specific targets to eliminate the dark, unwanted and damaged skin tissues.

How much does skin pigmentation treatment cost.

The skin pigmentation treatment cost in Pune varies for every individual depending on the following factors:

  • Area of pigmentation
